What we do

What is Pathways for Achievement?

Pathways for Achievement is a not-for-profit organization aimed at promoting the individual success and citizenship of at-risk teenagers. The value structure upon which Pathways is based holds that all people have dignity and infinite worth.

The Tae Kwon Do training is hard, but it’s fun. I feel stronger and more confident. I have important goals that I want to achieve.

Cari, age 15

How is the program organized?

Pathways for Achievement operates under a 3-dimensional structure:

  • Disciplined martial arts study for the teens.
  • Weekly tutoring sessions to help the teens with schoolwork.
  • Community service requirements to enable the teens to contribute to the community that supports them.

The entire program operates with the help of a quality group of adult volunteers. Experts and adult students in the martial art of Tae Kwon Do practice alongside the students twice a week to foster the development of self-discipline, goal setting, and mental and physical fitness. Qualified adults from business, educational and professional settings tutor the teens in the schoolwork. Community leaders and other volunteers provide opportunities for the teens to develop citizenship through numerous community service activities.

USG Corporation is pleased to support Pathways for Achievement and the positive influence the program can have on our youth. By providing an atmosphere where individual accomplishments are recognized and rewarded, students grow in maturity and self-confidence.

Al Pendexter, Jr., Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, U.S. Gypsum Corporation

What other activities are available to help the teens?

Inspirational speakers and limited field trip opportunities enable the teens to increase their contact with motivated and successful adults.

As an elected official, concerned citizen, and parent, I am delighted to see the Pathways for Achievement program take shape. It addresses many of the needs of our young people, and it foster positive feelings throughout the community. We need to support more programs of this kind.

C. James Carr, Mayor, City of Wheaton, IL

How are participants selected?

Ideal candidates are boys and girls, ages 13 to 17, who have been recommended by local schools, churches, or outreach centers. These young people may be:

  • At-risk academically, socially, or behaviorally.
  • From families that cannot support participation in enrichment activities.
  • Suffering from a lack of self-discipline, direction, confidence, or success.
  • Individuals who would directly benefit from contact with caring adults who will challenge them to set personal goals and then successfully attain them.

I’m looking forward to more community service activities. It gives me a good feeling to help others.

Jay, age 16

How is the progress of the students monitored?

Students sign a performance and service agreement that documents their commitment to the program. Guardians are involved in the enrollment process and guarantee attendance. A formal evaluation of the students’ attitude and success in Tae Kwon Do (including promotion), their grades in school, and the participation in community service activities in conducted. This evaluation is reviewed by the Advisory Board, the recommending school or agency, and the guardians.

Pathways for Achievement is exciting because it appeals to both the physical and mental aspects of a teenager’s development. Teachers, dentists, physicians, lawyers, tradesmen, and others are all participating to make this a value experience for the students. These mentors are caring and knowledgeable.

Anthony F. Altimari, MD, FACS
